CAP Fall 2017 1-Day Workshops: Southern California

CAP is offering 1-day workshops in co-requisite remediation in English and math and teaching statistics at El Camino College on Friday, September 15th and Saturday, September 16th. Please read the workshop descriptions and information below and select the tickets for the workshops you would like to attend.

Friday, September 15th 10:00-3:00

Co-Requisite Remediation: The Most Powerful Way to Increase Completion and Equity Among Incoming Students

Nationally and in California, colleges are seeing dramatic gains when they allow students to enroll directly in transferable, college-level math and English with additional support, instead of traditional remedial classes.

Under AB705 (currently being considered by the California legislature), community colleges would need to replace most traditional remedial courses with co-requisite models. A similar policy has just been announced by the CSU.

These day-long workshops will provide an introduction to co-requisite remediation, with data, hands-on activities, and guidance from faculty already implementing these approaches in California community colleges.

Get a jump start on developing your own local co-requisite models before the fall curriculum approval deadlines!

Please note that there are separate workshops for English and math faculty. These workshops will focus on developing, scaling, and teaching co-requisite models of College English and math, including:

• An overview of the latest research on co-requisite models

• Nuts and bolts information about developing and teaching co-requisite courses, with time for Q&A with early implementer community college faculty

• Time for faculty to work together on an action plan for developing and/or scaling co-requisite remediation, with support from facilitators

• Hands-on activities on classroom pedagogy and techniques for supporting students’ work in the transfer-level composition course

Statistics Workshop

This workshop will deepen statistical understanding and introduce best practices in pedagogy related to the teaching of introductory statistics at the community college level.

Dr. Roxy Peck, a pioneer and international leader in the field of statistics education, will be our lead facilitator.

The fall workshop will focus on common critical student misconceptions in introductory statistics. The morning sessions will take a close look at several common student errors and consider the underlying misconceptions that lead to these errors. We will explore strategies and classroom activities for addressing these misconceptions.

The afternoon will focus on the investigative cycle of problem solving and decision making, an emphasis recommended by the 2016 GAISE (Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education) Report. Dr. Peck will present an introductory talk, which will be followed by an interactive group activity and discussion.

At the end of the day, we will have a Q&A session with Dr. Peck and other community college faculty facilitators.

Attendee Information:

Please note that there are separate workshops for English and math faculty.

We encourage you to attend these workshops with at least one colleague from your department as there will be planning time for colleges to work on their action plans.

CAP will send you a campus map and parking permit as the workshop approaches.

Registration/Payment Information:

Attendees must register for each individual workshop. The cost for each workshop is $25.

Registrations to be paid by credit card through the Eventbrite registration. In case of cancellation, refunds will be available through Eventbrite until September 11, 2017. No refunds will be issued after this date.

Lunch will be provided to attendees. Please note any dietary needs on the registration form.
